How to Help Prevent Clogged Drains

Friday, March 20th, 2015

Drain clogs are one of the most persistent hassles that occur in residential plumbing. It’s almost impossible to avoid encountering them at least a few times during your life, and you will probably see more than one a year in most of homes. Although there are times when clogs are difficult to prevent ahead of time, such as when an object accidentally tips over into a sink or bathtub drain, you can avoid the majority with some planning. By taking a few precautionary steps, you can reduce the number of aggravating drain clogs in your home’s plumbing to a minimum.

These precautions often require assistance from professional plumbers. For professional kitchen plumbing services in Sahuarita, AZ, get in touch with the team at The Sunny Plumber. We also provide comprehensive bathroom plumbing services in the area that will assist you with keeping away drain blockages.

Here are a few things you can do to lower the amount of clogs your plumbing experiences:

Avoid pouring liquid F.O.G. down drains

F.O.G. stands for “fats, oils, and grease.” These food products look harmless in their hot liquid stage. But when they cool, they change into waxy, tough solids. The accumulation of F.O.G. along the inside of drainpipes is one of the main reasons for clogs to occur. Remove liquid fats, oils, and grease to a separate receptacle and place them in the trash, not the drains.

Use drain covers for bathroom drains

A simple drain cover will help significantly to reduce the amount of hair that goes down bathroom drains. Hair is the main enemy of sink and shower drains, because it sticks to the sides of the drainpipes and rapidly starts to catch other hair and debris, leading to thick clogs that are hard to remove. A drain cover will keep most hair from going down the drains.

Arrange for routine drain cleaning from professionals

Drain cleaning from skilled plumbers is something you will need whenever you experience a serious clog that a plunger won’t remove. But drain cleaning is also great as a maintenance services. Professionals use hydro-jetting to thoroughly scour the inside of drainpipes and remove most of the debris from them, both mineral and organic build-up. Drain cleaning done once a year will make it difficult for any clogs to form.

The Sunny Plumber has a drain cleaning team that is glad to help you with your bathroom and kitchen plumbing in Sahuarita, AZ. Give us a call today to arrange for routine drain cleaning services.

How to Take Proper Care of Your Garbage Disposal

Monday, February 16th, 2015

The garbage disposal is one of the most important components of your kitchen plumbing system. Without a working garbage disposal, your pipes would be more likely to clog, waste could backup into your drains, and your pipes may even need some major repairs. However, if you don’t take proper care of your garbage disposal, you may find that your garbage disposal gives out far too soon.

Make sure that your kitchen plumbing system continues to work properly for years to come by taking the right steps now to protect your plumbing and your disposal unit in the future. Follow our handy guide, and call The Sunny Plumber as soon as you encounter trouble with your kitchen plumbing in Green Valley.

  • Avoid these Items – Garbage disposals are suited to process a wide range of food items. However, they can’t process non-food items or hard food items like meat bones and popcorn kernels. You should also avoid fibrous food items like celery that could wrap around the impeller and stop the motor. And fats, oils, and grease (F.O.G.) can coat the disposal unit so that it runs less efficiently and they can cog your drains.
  • Use Cold Water – As we mentioned before, F.O.G. should be avoided whenever possible as it solidifies in the pipes and collects debris. However, many of the foods you eat contain grease and fats that could still damage your pipes or coat the disposal unit. But if you use cold water every time you run the garbage disposal, grease gets a chance to solidify before it clogs your drains so that the disposal unit can break it up.
  • Rip Food into Smaller Pieces – While the garbage disposal should be able to handle most types of food, larger chunks of food are more difficult. Rip large pieces of food into smaller pieces, and put it into the drain a little bit at a time.
  • Schedule Regular Maintenance – You should also schedule maintenance for your plumbing system every year. During a maintenance, a technician will look at your entire plumbing system in order to let you know about any potential repairs. They may clean parts like the garbage disposal and make some adjustments to the water heater. The technician can let you know if your garbage disposal shows too many signs of wear and tear and give you tips and tricks to take care of it in the future.

Call the trained and friendly professionals at The Sunny Plumber today to schedule an appointment if you need any kitchen plumbing repairs in the Green Valley area.

Plumbing Installations to Consider for Your Kitchen

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

Your plumbing system is central to the many tasks in your kitchen, but a few improvements could make cooking and cleaning even simpler. A professional plumber can help you to choose a plumbing installation that can improve productivity and the design of your kitchen.

Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals have mechanical components that wear down over time. Your older unit will need replacement eventually, so why not upgrade now? A newer unit may have greater horsepower in order to more effectively break down food. When the food scraps that move down your pipes are too large, they may become trapped along with fats and oils, blocking the pipes and potentially causing waste to backup into your home. If your unit seems to be slowing down, it may not do its job effectively, so don’t wait to call a plumber for replacement.

New Sink

A new sink may make your kitchen look more pleasant, or it could create a more efficient space for you to clean and prepare food. Whatever your needs may be in the kitchen, a new sink can make a wealth of difference. You may choose a deeper bowl or you may decide on a sink with two bowls instead of one. When you choose professional installation, a technician can help you find a new sink that makes cleanup move more quickly or gives you a larger space to work with in the kitchen.

Grease Trap

If you own or manage a commercial kitchen, you need a grease trap to collect grease before it moves into the pipes, posing an environmental hazard and potential drain clogs. Fats, oils, and grease solidify as they cool, and this combined with other solid waste can mean major trouble for your pipes. Be sure to call a commercial plumbing expert for installation, so that you don’t end up with a mess in the middle of a hectic business day.

A new installation in your kitchen can make a difference in your day, making simple tasks go smoothly and improving the look and feel of your home. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your house, so always trust the professionals for kitchen plumbing installation in Catalina. At The Sunny Plumber, we’ll help you choose the new fixture that is best for your home, and provide quality installation services. Call us today!

What the U-Shaped Pipe Under Your Kitchen Sink Does

Friday, June 6th, 2014

Kitchen plumbing in Green Valley and other Arizona communities certain has its share of issues that a plumber can help with. But over the years, technological advances have reduced or eliminated numerous other issues. Those advances are usually standard issue for most modern plumbing systems, and so commonplace that we never question their presence in our homes. For example, you’ve probably noticed a U-shaped pipe under your kitchen sink and wondered what it does. Wouldn’t it make more sense just to send the pipe straight into the wall? In point of fact, that little U actually does a great deal for your plumbing, and your kitchen really wouldn’t be the same without it.

The U itself is called a plumbing trap, and it’s designed to keep sewer gases from entering your home. Gases from the sewer system don’t obey the direction of the water flow, and can easily slip up your pipes if you’re not careful. The trap puts a stop to that. When the trap is wet (which is most of the time in kitchens that see daily use), it forms a seal separating the sink from the rest of the plumbing. Sewer gases stop at the U, and your home remains pleasant and sweet-smelling the way it should.

On a side note, the plumbing trap also makes an easy way to fish out things that get accidentally fall down the drain. For example, if you’re washing the dishes and your wedding ring slips off, it will fall straight into the pipe and stop at the bend. That makes it an easy fix for the plumber: he or she simply shuts off the water, detaches the pipe and restore your ring to you.

When plumbing traps don’t work, it’s usually because the water has dried up and broken the seal, a common problem with vacation homes and sinks that don’t see a lot of use. If you encounter that, or other problems, give the experts at The Sunny Plumber to help. When know what the U-shaped pipe under your kitchen sink does and we can repair most problems associated with kitchen plumbing. We also provide a variety of other plumbing services in Green Valley, AZ. Don’t hesitate to speak with one of our expert plumbers regarding any issues you may have with your plumbing. Contact us today to make an appointment. You’ll be glad you did!

What Foods Should Never Be Thrown Down the Drain

Friday, April 11th, 2014

Here in Catalina, kitchen plumbing doesn’t suffer from the same dangers that plumbing does in other parts of the country. We don’t worry about frozen pipes much here, and similar problems regarding cold weather just aren’t a regular concern. Even so, there are still plenty of kitchen plumbing problems that keep local plumbers hopping, including touch clogs caused by food being tossed down the drain. Here at The Sunny Plumber, we can handle most kitchen clogs with speed and efficiency, but you can prevent such clogs from forming simply by watching what you throw away and how. Here’s a brief list of what foods should never be thrown down the drain:

  •  Hot fat or grease
Cooking fat, grease, and similar foods often get thrown down the drain without thinking, since in liquid form they seem quite harmless. Unfortunately, they can solidify very quickly in the cool confines of your pipes, creating an instant clog in the bargain.
  • Vegetable peels
Potato and carrot peelings are made of fibrous material, which can combine with soap and other food particular to make a very strong clog. If you’re peeling vegetables over the sink, then plug up the sink while you do it, and remove the peelings to the garbage can when you’re done.
  • Seeds
Similarly, big seeds like peach pits and avocado pits can create a clog all on their own, blocking garbage disposals and flat-out sealing pipes that aren’t big enough to pass them properly. Never throw seeds from your vegetables down the drain.
  • Bones
Chicken bones, pork bones and any other meat bones have no place in your kitchen plumbing. They’re too strong for a disposal to break up and too damaging to risk tossing down a drain. Throw them in the garbage instead.

Knowing what foods should never be thrown down the drain is a good preventative step. When you encounter more substantial issues, then The Sunny Plumber can help. We know the unique plumbing services in Catalina that homeowners need, kitchen plumbing or otherwise, and we’re on call to help you resolve them. Give us a call to set up an appointment today!
