It can be quite difficult to detect plumbing leaks, at least without professional training and equipment. Much of the system is hidden behind walls and under floors, not to mention the fact that plumbing leaks tend to start pretty small. Most of the time, homeowners only notice that they have a plumbing leak after a wide area has been water damaged.
You don’t want the leak to let it get that bad before taking action, which is why it’s important to be able to recognize the early signs that you have a leak.
You should be monitoring your water bills from month to month anyway, but keep a close eye on any sudden spikes that happen without apparent reason. If your bills indicate that you’re using more water than you know you are, it could mean that you have a leak in the system.
The Water Meter
A very easy way to tell if you have a leak in your system is to turn off all the plumbing appliances in your home, and then have a look at the water meter. If the meter is still running, it means that water is continuing to leave the system somewhere. That means you probably have a leak.
This one doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a leak, but it could. Loss of water pressure in one or more faucets definitely indicates a problem somewhere in the plumbing system. It could be a leak, or a blockage, or even an issue further back in the city water main. No matter what, however, it’s not something that should be ignored. Have a plumber examine your system to make sure that everything is alright.
