Should I Install a Water Softener in My Home?

A water softener is a great thing to have in your home, providing that you need it in the first place. Not all homes in the country struggle with hard water, though many of them do. If you do happen to have a hard water problem in your home, you are setting yourself up for a lot of issues down the road if you don’t have a water softener installed. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can tell if you need a water softener installed in your home.

Lime Scale Buildup

Hard water is water with a high amount of magnesium and calcium in it. Over time, surfaces exposed to hard water will start to develop lime scale. Lime scale is basically a buildup of these minerals carried by hard water. If you want to check to see if your home has a hard water problem, look around your faucet heads and in your bathtub. If you see a white, chalky substance in those areas, that’s lime scale. You should probably have a water softener installed sooner rather than later.

Dropping Water Pressure

The big threat associated with lime scale buildup is that it can eventually become advanced enough to restrict the flow of water through your plumbing pipes. This leads to a drop in water pressure. If the water pressure in your system seems to be dropping over time, it might be because you have lime scale building up in your pipes. Lime scale will eventually harden if it is not cleaned out in time, becoming impossible to remove without damaging the pipe it’s attached to. So be sure to call for professional help as soon as you notice this symptom.
