The end of the year is an exciting time—a time for celebrating with those closest to you. For many of us, that means hosting our friends and families at our homes. And for our homes, that can mean a whole lot of added strain on our plumbing systems in Tucson, AZ. We know that it’s the last thing you want to be thinking about when you’re in celebration mode, but your plumbing system may struggle throughout the season.
The good news is that a bit of prevention really does go a long way. Our expert plumbers have some tips and tricks to help you get through the holiday hosting season as pain-free as possible. Well, at least when it comes to your plumbing system. We won’t come wash your dishes or anything, and we certainly won’t be cooking for your guests—though that itself is something to be thankful for!
Make the Trash Bin Clearly Visible
This is especially important if you have guests with young children coming to your home during the holidays. Kids don’t understand the effects that putting anything other than toilet paper down the toilet will have on your plumbing system. In fact, a lot of adults fail to realize this, as well. That’s why it’s so important to keep the trash bin right next to the toilet, and to feel comfortable giving a bit of instruction to your guests.
Baby wipes, sanitary napkins, and other such waste cannot be flushed down your toilet. No, not even if those products claim to be “flushable”! We’ve seen far too many clogs that developed due to homeowners believing such false claims. Let everyone know that your plumbing system is for waste and toilet paper only.
Show Helpful Family Members How to Use the Garbage Disposal
It’s fine to accept help when cleaning up after a big family meal, but make sure that everyone helping out knows how to use the systems available to them. It may sound obvious to those of us that have garbage disposals, but not everyone does—and not everyone knows how to use them!
As you know, you need to keep the water running when using your garbage disposal. You also need to keep certain items out of the garbage disposal. What kinds of items? Raw bones, fruit pits, and very fibrous foods, for starters. Also, remember that fat and grease belongs in a can to freeze, not down the drain.
Keep Shower Drains Clear
If you’re not just hosting for dinner, but are also hosting overnight or through the holiday season, then it’s safe to assume that some folks are going to use the shower over the course of their stay. And that means a lot more hair than usual in the tub.
Make sure that there are drain guards in place, both in the tub and in the sinks, and make sure that the expectation is set that those showering then clear their hair out of that drain. You’re opening up your home. Don’t open up your wallet for drain cleaning services you can easily avoid.
