A leaky faucet is perhaps one of the most common plumbing problems in the country. It’s something that will eventually happen to most of us, and most of us are probably not going to deal with it properly. The vast majority of homeowners will do one of two things when confronted with a leaky faucet. They will either 1) ignore it, or 2) attempt to fix it themselves. Neither of these is a good idea. Let’s take a look at why that is.
1) Ignoring It
The average leaky faucet releases just a few drops of water every few seconds. Not all that much, when you just observe it for a minute or two. However, that water waste adds up very fast. If you leave a leaky faucet alone for an entire year, it could end up wasting as much as several hundred gallons worth of water. This is incredibly wasteful, and costs you money on an annual basis, besides. It doesn’t matter how slow the faucet leaks, ignoring it is not going to fix the problem. You need to eliminate the leak as soon as possible.
2) Do It Yourself
So ignoring the problem is only going to ensure that you waste a lot of water. However, trying to repair it yourself is almost worse. Fixing a leaky faucet is pretty low on the complexity scale, as far as plumbing jobs go. However, it’s still something you need to have professional training for in order to execute it properly. Attempting to fix the faucet yourself is liable to make the problem worse, in fact. It’s far better just to trust repairs to a professional plumber, who can return your faucet to good condition.
